Celebrate for a Cause

Celebrate Makar Sankranti with Akshaya Patra!

Makar sankranti

Relive the days of your childhood. During this season, recollect the beautiful rangolis that would decorate the entrance of our homes; remember competing with your friends in the neighbourhood, to check whose kites flew higher in the sky? The whiff of mixed smells of sweet, sour and snacks would leave us drooling for the feast.

During the times of our ancestors, farmers tilled their land, sowed seeds, watered the plants and then harvested the fully-grown crops. This would provide a great amount of yield and some quantity of the fresh yield would be used to cook meals at farmers’ homes. It was the harvest of a new season, which meant the beginning of New Year! This also was the time of joy and celebration!

Makar Sankranti is celebrated across different states of India and is known by various names – Suggi, Pongal, Magha Saaji, Lohri, Uttarayan, Magh Bihu and many more.

So, this season, carry the tradition forward. Expand the warmth of this season to children who need it. Donate, because tiny hearts should eat nutritious food to grow.

How can you make a difference?

akshaya patra ngo in andhra pradesh

The Akshaya Patra Foundation began its journey in the year 2000 with 1,500 students in 5 schools in Bengaluru, Karnataka. By implementing the Government of India’s PM POSHAN (Mid-Day Meal Programme), our main aim is to eliminate classroom hunger and enhance the nutritional status of children.

Currently, we feed over 2 million children every day in 23,242 schools and Anganwadi centres in 67 locations across 15 states and two union territories in India.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has awarded the organisation ‘Excellence in Financial Reporting’ for seven consecutive years, making Akshaya Patra only the third organisation to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and the first NGO to receive this honour.

Currently, we have kitchens in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Daman-DNH, Delhi, Karnataka, Odisha, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh. Let’s have a brief glimpse of Akshaya Patra’s work in Andhra Pradesh.

Empowering children through 10 kitchens of Akshaya Patra, Anthra Pradesh

Akshaya Patra opened its first kitchen in Andhra Pradesh in 2008.

As of today, we are operating ten kitchens across the state feeding 1,30,231 children in 1,950 schools. All ten centralised kitchens in Andhra Pradesh, including Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Mangalagiri, Nellore, Gambhiram, Gudivada, Srikakulam, Kuppam, Ongole and Kalyandurg, serve freshly cooked wholesome meals thereby maintaining children’s nutritional levels.

When children receive hot, tasty and nutritious meals in schools, it encourages them to come to school every day, thus improving attendance and retention rates. Proper nutrition gives them the ability to concentrate better in their classes and perform well in academics. Based on the local palate and cyclical menu, in Andhra Pradesh, we serve the following food items: Rice, Pappu Charru, Pulihora Veg Biriyani, Tomato Dal, Aloo Kurma, Kichdi Tomato, Leaf dal, Sambar, Sweet Pongal, etc.
