This Independence Day, Help Free Children from Hunger

What makes a nation future-ready? Children who are nourished, learning and full of possibility

You can’t dream on an empty stomach. Or spell “photosynthesis.” Or care about what Class 5B is doing today. Here’s why a full plate is where real learning starts.

Every morning, somewhere in India, a child opens a textbook and closes it right back not because the lesson is hard, but because their stomach is louder than the teacher. Hunger doesn’t announce itself with a bang. It shows up quietly, as a wandering mind, a missed question, a dropped-out year.

The Plate of Freedom
A plate was never just a plate but a platter filled with nutrition, all meant to be enjoyed together. Turns out, a school meal works the same way.

Grow
Growth in children is continuous
Growth in children is a continuous process that supports their physical, mental and emotional development. Proper nutrition, regular activity and a healthy environment help children grow stronger and reach their full potential.

Play
Recess is where childhood happens
One loud, chaotic hour after a meal… running, laughing at nothing is where childhood actually happens. A child who’s eaten has the energy to play. A child who plays, learns to belong.

Dream
Ambition needs fuel
Nobody plans to be a pilot, a poet or a professor while counting down to lunch. A full stomach buys a child the one thing big dreams require most: room in the head to imagine something bigger.

Focus
The mind concentrates better
A child can focus better after eating a nutritious meal. When hunger is no longer distracting them, they can pay attention in class, ask questions and learn more effectively.

Belong
A shared plate makes an equal classroom
When every child eats school meal together, sitting in the same row, there is a sense of equality. It becomes nobody’s business which, quietly, is exactly the point.

A Tale of Two Mornings

Without a meal
8:45 am: Walks to school on an empty stomach, already tired.
10 am: Copies the notes but the words won’t stay still.
11:30 am: Stomach growls loud enough for the bench-mate to hear.
1 pm:  Asks to go home “not feeling well.” It’s not a lie.
Someday: Stops asking to go to school at all.

With a meal
8:45 am: Walks in, chatting about last night’s cricket score.
12 noon: Hot lunch, mostly, rice, sambar, a vegetable, sometimes a sweet.
12:45 pm: Ten minutes of noise, laughter, seconds if there’s extra.
1 pm: Back in class, actually raising a hand to answer.
Someday: Finishes school. Maybe even teaches in one.

“We didn’t set out to make better students. We set out to fill a plate the rest, it turns out, just needed a chance to happen.”
– from The Akshaya Patra Foundation, on why the meal always comes before the marks

Freedom isn’t about fighting wars. It’s served, one plate at a time.

Every meal we cook is really a small act of trust that a child fed today will show up tomorrow, and the day after, until “someday” actually arrives.

Akshaya Patra 2025 Recap: Meals, Milestones and Million Smiles

Official Blog_banner-TAPF Recap-web

In more than 23,000 schools across India, classrooms stay lively because every child sits nourished and eager to learn. 2025 was a year of growing together to feed more and make a greater impact. We witnessed many more hunger warriors joining our cause and it is because of their generosity that every child received meals every day without fail.

This growing support and the smile of 2.35 million children are the ultimate testament to the trust placed in us.

Akshaya Patra’s Recap 2025

Committed to a purpose of making lives better with nutritious meals, 2025 brought us significant milestones:

• Celebrated 25 years of service

On 11 November 2025, Akshaya Patra marked its 25th anniversary of feeding children. On this day, we commemorated our journey that started in 2000 with 1,500 children in five schools in Bengaluru, which has now grown to serve mid-day meals to 2.35 million children across 16 states and 3 UTs. In 2025 alone, we served 480 million mid-day meals and 120 million morning nutrition servings.

• Inaugurated the first centralised kitchen in Goa

In March this year, Dr. Pramod Sawant, the Honourable Chief Minister of Goa, inaugurated our 78th kitchen and the first one in Goa. It has the capacity to prepare up to 5,000 meals. Like in other states, we serve meals adhering to the local palate, such as chapatis, batata bhaji, vatana bhaji, vegetable korma, idli, sambar, soya chunks, mixed-veg pulav, etc.

• First centralised kitchen in Bihar

Akshaya Patra is gearing up to begin its journey in Bihar. In June, the Bhoomi Pujan of the Foundation’s first centralised kitchen in Bihar was held. Sunil Kumar, the Honourable Minister of Education, laid the foundation stone of the facility, which is expected to improve attendance and nutritional status of thousands of children across Patna district through MDM.

• Bhavnagar kitchen is fully powered by solar.

With 93.9 kW solar capacity installed, the Bhavnagar kitchen in Gujarat is now operates entirely on solar power. This not only eliminates the electric bill of the kitchen but also reduces the carbon footprint, a significant milestone in our efforts to protect the greener future that the community we serve deserves.

• Delhi kitchen delivery fleet is fully electric

The meal delivery fleet across Delhi has become fully electric, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This is another testament to our sustainable operations under the MDM initiative.
